In the picturesque temple town of Vrindavan, 10-year-old Maya and her three siblings walk to school every day on an empty stomach. She says her parents can't afford to feed them adequate meals; they eat bread and milk for dinner and nothing for breakfast. As the eldest child, she often has to skip class to help her parents harvest wheat.

The Public Relation Council of India (PRCI) recently held its 7th Annual Global Communication Conclave at Hyderabad. It was a two-day Global Meet and the agenda included: Induction of PR Professionals into Hall of Fame; Chanakya Awards for Achievers; followed by Corporate Collateral Award. The Akshaya Patra Foundation received a Gold Award in PRCI Corporate Collateral Awards-2013.
Even as Uttar Pradesh tries to tackle an abysmally high child malnutrition rate in the state, Akshaya Patra Foundation, the not-for-profit organization that runs the mid-day meal program for underprivileged school children has stepped in to help the beleaguered government. Presently operational only in Vrindavan where its kitchen daily feeds 1.65 lakh children studying in 1633 government schools, Akshya Patra Foundation on Saturday announced plans to expand its operation in the state and set up kitchens in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra and Kannauj.
On August 5, 2012, The Akshaya Patra Foundation celebrated serving of its billionth meal. The celebration took place in Bangalore in the presence of a host of government functionaries, corporate representatives, and philanthropists who have been associated with Akshaya Patra. The highlight of the event was the announcement that Shankar Mahadevan will henceforth be the Goodwill Ambassador for Akshaya Patra and spread its message across the world.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, headquartered in Bangalore runs a school meal programme, feeding 1.3 million children every school working day in 8 states of India in a public-private partnership with the Central and state governments.The programme is in its 12th year of operations and has scaled up from a modest number of 1500 children in the year 2000 to the current reach of 1.3 million children.
