Assam, a state of bewitching scenic beauty, lies in the North-Eastern zone of the Indian sub-continent. Often called the Gateway to North-East India, it covers an area of 78, 523 sq. km (approx), accounting for nearly 2.39% of the country. A rich and vibrant place, it is the more charming for the warm hospitality of its people. However, despite the vast majesty and natural resources of the area, the economy of the state today represents a unique case of backwardness amidst plenty.
