Akshaya Patra in OrissaFrom the 1st of July 2001, cooked mid-day meals were served in Government and Government-aided primary schools of Orissa in the rural areas of 8 KBK districts1. Akshaya Patra first began its work in this state in Puri; seeing a need to reach out to underprivileged children in remote areas of Orissa, we introduced the decentralized kitchen model in Nayagarh District in 2007. This model aims to not only provide children with nutritious food, but also create employment for women in the area. Self help groups are identified and trained to cook the meals in a hygienic and cleanly manner.
