About Us

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one of the pioneer NGOs to implement the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. Established in 2000 and headquartered in Bengaluru, India, the Foundation has been in the service of children for the past 18 years.

Mission: To feed 5 million children by 2020.

Remaining focussed on its vision and mission, Akshaya Patra has progressed responsibly from providing nutritious meals to 1,500 children in 2000 to providing freshly cooked, locally palatable, wholesome meals to 1,762,133 children in 2018. With emphasis on serving children sustainably, the Foundation has strategically increased its operational base from five schools in one location to 14,702 schools in 40 locations of 12 states. Akshaya Patra has been recognised as the world's largest NGO-run school lunch programme.

On the occasion of the 18th year of service to children, the entire Akshaya Patra family wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to all the Committed Volunteers, Steadfast Supporters, Benevolent Donors, Goodwill Ambassadors, and Philanthropic Businesses and Corporate Partners.

PROGRESSING RESPONSIBLY

18 years back, Akshaya Patra began its journey to provide healthy and sumptuous school meals to children in Government and Government-aided schools. During the journey, it kept assessing its effectiveness in meeting the objectives of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme by regularly conducting impact studies in association with third-party research agencies. The studies revealed palpable impact of mid-day meals on health of children, school enrolment, regular attendance, and academic performance.

Witnessing the impact, Akshaya Patra realised that while wholesome meals are taking care of health and education, something more needs to be done for overall development of children.

This resulted in the launch of the following initiatives:

Giving Every Dream a Chance

Initiated in 2016, this programme focusses on identifying hidden talents and interests among beneficiary children and providing them with mentorship in association with academies and professionals. So far, more than 300 children have been benefitted.

Scholarship Programme

For all aspiring beneficiaries who desire to pursue higher studies, Akshaya Patra has created a platform wherein they can receive scholarship to fulfil their desire. So far, 338 ex-Akshaya Patra beneficiaries have been benefitted under Alumni Scholarship and 120 Akshaya Patra beneficiaries of Standard IX and X have been benefitted under Akshaya Patra Beneficiary Scholarship.

Anganwadi Feeding Programme

With the aim to provide a healthy foundation during the formative years of children, Akshaya Patra began providing nutritious meals in Anganwadi centres. It currently provides wholesome meals to 1,61,410 children between the ages of 3-6 years in 4,786 Anganwadi centres in five states and 6,410 pregnant women and lactating mothers across 323 centres in Jaipur.

Model Schools

Akshaya Patra has initiated the Model School Programme to create replicable model of excellence by encompassing infrastructural reforms and community engagement to improve schooling experience. A pilot has already been started in Bengaluru and Akshaya Patra aims to scale this up to benefit 1 lakh children in the upcoming years.
