The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that strives to fight issues like hunger and malnutrition in India by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the government schools and government-aided schools.
Since 2000, the organisation has worked towards reaching more children with wholesome food on every single school day. Today, Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit run) mid-day meal programme serving wholesome food to over 1.7 million children from 14,173 schools across 12 states in India.
Hunger and illiteracy are India’s two major challenges. Akshaya Patra is focussed on eliminating classroom hunger and attracting more children (enrolment) to schools and ensure to keep them in school (reduce drop-out rate) by feeding a filling, nutritious mid-day meal, every school day.
The Foundation has 34 centralised kitchens and 2 decentralised kitchens. They are equipped with state-of-the-art technology which enables large scale cooking, approximately 2 lakh meals a day!

- Akshaya Patra launched its feeding programme with 1,500 children in Bengaluru, Karnataka in 2000.
- Innovation gave rise to a new chapter at the organisation - an indigenous roti-making machine capable of producing 10,000 rotis per hour in Vrindavan was installed in 2002.
- In 2003, Former President of India, eminent scientist, Shri APJ Abdul Kalam, visited Akshaya Patra and expressed his appreciation for its service. In the same year, Akshaya Patra signed a MoU with the Government of Karnataka for partnership in the Mid-Day Meal Programme Programme.
- The Foundation became a case study at the prestigious Harvard Business School, as part of its MBA curriculum in 2006.
- In 2010, the Foundation entered the India Book of Records for running the world's largest school meal programme.
- The Foundation was ranked 23rd among the top 100 NGOs in the world by The Global Journal in 2012.
- In 2013, His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama visited Akshaya Patra.
- In 2014, Former President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, visited Jaipur kitchen.
- Akshaya Patra successfully completed ISO 22000 Audit and recertification for 10 kitchens in 2015.
- In 2016, Akshaya Patra served its 2 billionth cumulative meals since inception, and Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Honourable President of India, graced the Foundation's 2 Billion Meals Celebrations in Bengaluru.
- Akshaya Patra was a part of Guinness World Record-breaking Event at the World Food India 2017.
- Akshaya Patra began 2018 by initiating a pilot in partnership with the Government of Karnataka to include millets in the Mid-Day Meal Scheme.
- Akshaya Patra won the Gold Shield Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
- Akshaya Patra received Nikkei Asia Prize 2016 in the ‘Economic and Business Innovation’ category.
- The Government of India presented the Padma Shri award to Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa, Chairman of Akshaya Patra.
- Akshaya Patra won five PRCI Collateral Awards and Chanakya Award.
- Kalam Innovation in Governance Award (KIGA) 2016 was presented to Akshaya Patra.
