Children attain a number of developmental milestones during the first six years of life, laying the groundwork for their future growth. In fact, regular intake of balanced nutrition during this phase lowers the risk of developing chronic diseases as an adult. Considering these benefits, high-quality nutrition is a must of for a child's overall development.
Similarly, women have specific dietary needs throughout their lives, particularly prior to and after childbirth, when their vulnerability is at its highest. For their well-being and that of their children, it is necessary to provide them with a healthy diet, essential services and proper care.
THE ANGANWADI FEEDING PROGRAMME
Under this programme, The Akshaya Patra Foundation serves cooked meals to pregnant women, lactating mothers and children in Anganwadi centres (AWCs). This programme runs as a logical parallel to serving mid-day meals in schools as part of PM POSHAN Abhiyaan, with the crucial goal of eliminating malnutrition in children.
As with mid-day meals, we adhere to local palate in Anganwadi feeding. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, for instance, we serve rice, pulihora, tomato dal, spinach pappu, yellow cucumber pappu, bottle gourd pappu, sambar and green leafy curry. Similarly, in Gujarat, we serve tur dal lachko, thepla with vegetable preparation, jeera rice, desi chana gravy, vegetable pulav and vegetable sambar.
The cost per meal per person for Anganwadi feeding programme is ₹6.5. As a part of this programme, we serve nutritious meals at AWCs 6 days a week, i.e., Monday to Saturday, bringing the average to 300 days a year.
Currently, Akshaya Patra serves meals to 73,500 children at 2,940 Anganwadi centres in 5 locations of 3 states of India. Your contribution can provide nutritious meals to expectant and new mothers and growing children.
