SURPASSING CHALLENGES

  • Foraying into remotely located Kashirampara (North Tripura).
  • Dealing with lack of resources and zero formal school facility.

FEEDING AND EDUCATING CHILDREN

  • Providing children with wholesome meals for healthy growth.
  • Empowering children by introducing formal education.

CREATING BETTER TOMORROWS

  • Healthy and educated children will grow up to be resourceful individuals.
  • Resourceful folks will pave way for the progress of the Reang tribe.

MAJOR CHALLENGES

  • Kashirampara is a remote location in North Tripura.
  • 7,000 children of Reang tribe are currently out-of-school.
  • Nutritional requirement of children has not been met adequately.
  • Poor school infrastructure, deficient training infrastructure, a depressingly low number of teacher educators, and uneven distribution of teachers.
  • The education in this remote rural area, about 80 kilometers from the district headquarters, Dharmanagar, was under the State Government-aided school, all of which are of Bengali medium and mostly meant for primary education with a little scope for secondary education.
  • In many places in Tripura, primary and upper primary schools are run in the same building, in morning and afternoon shifts.
  • On an average, schools in Tripura function for 22 hours a week for 100 to 284 days in an academic session. This is only half the time prescribed as working hours for teachers as per RTE norms viz. 45 hours a week (although the higher figure includes time that teachers have to spend in preparing for class as well).
  • Only 29.8% schools in entire Tripura has electricity.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As a forward move, The Akshaya Patra Foundation recently expanded its reach to Tripura. It is a Social Development Project to bring the tribal population of the north-eastern state of Tripura into mainstream by enabling access to modern education for the children. This project will mainly benefit the children from the Reang (Bru ethnic group) tribal community. Reang are the second largest tribal community of Tripura and are recognised as one of the 75 primitive tribes in India.

Akshaya Patra will be parallelly focussing on:
  • Day Schools to create a learning ecosystem. As a pilot, we have set up a basic community school with the capacity to educate 1,000 children.
  • Mid-Day Meal Programme to provide adequate nutrition to children. Presently, we have set up a temporary kitchen to serve two schools: one at Kashirampara, and the second at Sadhak Ratan Moni Vidyalaya at Anand Bazaar.

IMPACT SO FAR

Akshaya Patra started a school in Kashirampara, Kanchanpur Sub-division, Tripura on 29 March 2017. Below is a quick snapshot of the impact it has created in a duration of one year.
  • There has been 74% surge in the students’ intake in 2018.
  • The free school facility has made the difference in addition to mid-day meal and English medium.
  • There are 910 first-generation learners.
  •
  •
  • Aside from regular academics, aspects such as art/drawing, clay-moulding, craftsmanship, football coaching facilities etc. have also been included to give students an exposure to multiple fields, most of which the north-eastern children have an inherent affinity for.
  • This is likely to ascertain the ability or interest of the students and will consequently help in finding out the hidden talents of the students.
  • In a larger picture, education and talent development will create an empowered and resourceful generation with the ability to fulfil their dreams and goals.
