Nestled in the outskirts of Hampi, the city of ruins, stands GHMPS Kamlapura, a school that is more than just a place of learning. Among the many students who walk through its corridors, Bharat Kumar’s story is one of exceptional resilience and unyielding determination. Bharat Kumar, a 14-year-old student in the 7th grade, embodies the spirit of perseverance. His journey is marked by immense personal loss and a profound sense of responsibility.
The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a devastating blow to his family. Speaking of his family, Bharat says, “I used to live with my parents, grandmother and an elder sister. My father, Anjini Kumar, was a fruit vendor. And my mother, Shantamma worked diligently as a vegetable vendor. Though we had a modest income, things were going fine. But in 2020, COVID-19 spread, and it claimed the lives of my parents.” With their sudden passing, Bharat, at a tender age, found himself thrust into the role of the primary caregiver and provider for his family.
“Now I live with my grandmother, Kaveri, and my elder sister. Currently, she is pursuing her 2nd year of PUC,” Bharat says. Bharat's life has been fraught with challenges. His elder sister’s education is a significant concern, and Bharat’s role in supporting the family has become even more crucial. With no other source of income, Bharat’s family depends heavily on his earnings and the support they receive from their community.
Bharat’s daily life is a balancing act between his responsibilities at home and his commitment to his education. Each day, he rises early to help his grandmother with household chores before heading to his part-time job at a local medical shop. As a helper, Bharat earns a modest income that is vital for the family’s survival. Despite his academic pressures, he prioritises his work, understanding that his efforts are crucial for his family’s well-being.
Behind all the efforts and struggles lies his aspiration to become a civil engineer. The aspiration is a beacon of hope in his otherwise challenging life. Bharat’s ambition was inspired by his teachers, who encouraged him to pursue a profession that would allow him to contribute meaningfully to society. “My teacher told me that becoming a civil engineer would give me the opportunity to create buildings that can help people and improve their lives,” Bharat shares with a sense of purpose. He dreams of designing structures that will not only be functional but also enhance the quality of life for many.
Despite the heavy burdens he carries, Bharat remains dedicated to his studies. His favourite subject is English, a subject he finds both fascinating and essential for his future aspirations. “I love studying English. It helps me understand the world better and prepares me for my future career,” he explains. His commitment to his education is evident in his daily routine. After finishing his chores and working at the medical shop, Bharat devotes his evenings to studying. His determination to excel academically is a testament to his unwavering resolve to secure a better future for himself and his family.
Amidst all the challenges, the support from their neighbour, Rahim Basha, is another crucial aspect of Bharat’s life. Rahim Basha has been a pillar of strength for Bharat and his sister, often going out of his way to assist them. “Rahim Chacha has always been there for us. He supports us with anything we need. He encourages me to focus on his studies rather than working too hard,” says Bharat.
“I have seen Bharat and his sister grow up. In fact, when Bharat was a child, he used to eat food at our home,” says Rahim with a mixed expression. “When his parents expired, we stood beside him and tried to do whatever we could to support the family. Every month, we buy rations for both the families. All I want for Bharat is to study, become a civil engineer and complete his dreams. We have asked him to quit his job at the medical store and focus on his studies. But he doesn’t budge,” he adds. Rahim’s support underscores the importance of community in helping individuals navigate through tough times.
Bharat’s story is not just one of struggle but also community support and resilience. The Akshaya Patra Foundation plays a pivotal role in his life by providing nutritious mid-day meals. “The meals provided by Akshaya Patra are delicious. I especially like the rice and sambaar, and the Saturday meals of curd and upma are my favourites,” Bharat says. These meals not only provide him with essential nutrition but also relieve the financial burden on his family. “We don’t have to worry about his meals. He has food at school. Even my children study in the same school and eat Akshaya Patra meals. I can vouch that the food is good,” Rahim says with a smile.
As Bharat continues to work towards his dream of becoming a civil engineer, his story serves as an inspiring example of how perseverance and support can transform lives. With each passing day, Bharat moves closer to his goal, driven by the desire to create a better future for himself and those around him. His journey is fuelled by Akshaya Patra meals which provide him with adequate nutrition for physical and mental well-being. Every school day, Akshaya Patra serves hot, tasty and nutritious mid-day meals to 2.25 million children like Bharat. These meals are an effort to implement PM POSHAN Abhiyaan in government schools across India. Akshaya Patra’s efforts are in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-2: zero hunger and SDG-4: provide quality education).
Bharat’s story powerfully illustrates resilience, responsibility and hope. Despite the profound challenges he faces, he remains steadfast in his commitment to his family and his future. His journey reflects his deep-seated determination to overcome obstacles and achieve his dreams. The support from Akshaya Patra and his community provides him with the foundation he needs to pursue his goals
