Working in a crematorium despite the scare of the pandemic

The crematorium is very busy since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

When every other workplace was devoid of employees, the crematorium was the only place that was bustling with a huge footfall. 38-year-old Meena works as a gravedigger at Chira Shanti Dham – Hebbal Crematorium/Graveyard. She travels 30-35 km daily to her workplace. Hotels were closed due to the lockdown and people like her faced difficulty finding food to eat. Paying for food was out of the question in itself.

For the last two months, Akshaya Patra has been providing packed lunch every afternoon. All the people who work in this crematorium receive food every day. Meena says that she has received great help in the form of food. According to her, the food is quite filling and at times, she even takes 4-5 packets home.

Lockdown or not, duty comes first for people like Meena. Make food available to such people who do not take a break despite the pandemic.
