It is an annual observation in honour of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. Each year, this day is celebrated with a specific theme that advocates the critical need of tackling global hunger.The theme for 2019 is:

“Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets. For a #Zero Hunger World.”

At The Akshaya Patra Foundation, ‘Every School Day is a Food Day’! We work towards achieving Zero Hunger by providing wholesome mid-day meals to school children across India. Currently, we are providing mid-day meals to more than 1.8 million children in 16,856 Government schools across 51 kitchens in 12 States & 2 Union Territories of India. This meal has proved to be a potential supporting pillar in creating generations of healthy, educated, and resourceful citizens.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an Indian NGO headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is the implementing partner of Government of India's Mid-Day Meal Scheme. The NGO is actively working towards eliminating classroom hunger by providing nutritious mid-day meals to school-going children since 2000. The Foundation has been recognised as the world's largest NGO-run school lunch programme. Currently, Akshaya Patra is feeding 18,02,517 children in 16,856 government and government-aided schools in 51 kitchens of 12 states & 2 Union territory of India.
